Romania is at the forefront of Europe in solar energy development, recording in 2025 the highest growth in photovoltaic capacity on the continent, with an increase of over 45% compared to the previous year. It is a spectacular leap that confirms renewable energy is no longer a plan for the future, but a present-day reality.
This year, Romania added approximately 2.5 GW of new photovoltaic capacity, surpassing the growth pace of other well-established European markets. This rapid development is supported by substantial private investments, European funds, and the growing interest of both prosumers and large-scale solar project developers.
According to SolarPower Europe forecasts, by 2030 Romania could reach 24,000 MW installed in solar energy alone, more than three times its current capacity. This level would turn photovoltaic energy into a key pillar of the national energy mix, with a direct impact on energy security and the reduction of carbon emissions.
The rapid growth of the sector also comes with challenges. Grid capacity, energy storage integration, and production balancing will play a decisive role in the coming years. Nevertheless, the direction is clear: Romania is positioning itself as one of the most dynamic solar markets in Europe.
Solar energy is no longer just an alternative; it is becoming the main driver of the energy transition, and Romania appears determined to fully capitalize on this advantage.
