Romania Crosses 3,000 MW Solar Capacity

Romania Breaks Through 3,000 MW Installed Capacity in Solar Parks for the First Time

Romania has achieved a milestone in its renewable energy transition: installed capacity in solar parks has exceeded 3.000 MW,according to real-time data from the Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE).

The surge is remarkable: in 2022 solar park capacity stood around 1.4 GW, and now approaches 3.1 GW — notes the Romanian Photovoltaic Industry Association (RPIA).

This advance positions solar as the third-largest generation source behind hydro and wind, with solar set to overtake wind which today stands at ~3,137 MW.

However, challenges remain: the main bottleneck is grid connection — connection permits issued total some 70,000 MW, and the new connection regulation (effective from Jan 1 2026) introduces uncertainty for investors.

Besides park installations, Romania has about 3,100 MW installed among prosumers, bringing the country’s total solar capacity to over 6,100 MW. At the current pace, the 10,000 MW target for 2030 may be achieved ahead of schedule.
