New record for photovoltaic energy in Europe

New record for photovoltaic energy in Europe in March 2025, but dependence on expensive fossil fuels persists – Eurelectric

In March 2025, solar energy reached a new record in Europe, contributing over 10% to the energy mix for the third consecutive month. This increase, along with improved nuclear production and favorable weather conditions, led to a decrease in electricity prices to 90 euros/MWh, down from 126 euros/MWh in February and 112 euros/MWh in January.

However, dependence on fossil fuels persists, and the average electricity price on the spot market in the first quarter of 2025 was 51% higher than in the same period of 2024, mainly due to a 33% increase in gas prices. Eurelectric emphasizes the need to accelerate the implementation of storage technologies and long-term contracts to reduce vulnerability to fluctuations in fossil fuel prices.
